Lake Eucumbene Units

There are numerous old mines and workings dotted throughout Kosciusko National Park. Many of these are accessible by walking while some you can drive to. Almost all of the mines and workings have good specimens of the mineralisation that is typical for the region. Remember they are located within a National Park, so you are unable to remove any specimens unless you have permission from the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Some of the most visited workings are that of the Kiandra Goldfields. If you stop on the side of the road, at the turnoff to Selwyn Snowfields, you will see the scars of the gold rush. During 1851, the side of the hill was scoured with high pressure water to wash the gold from the alluvial soils. A 9kg gold nugget was extracted from this area under the basalt cap. This became known as New Chum Hill.

Further information regarding any of these mines can be obtained via the NSW Department of Primary Industries via the DIGS search. Just type in the name of the mine into the search and it will come up with all available information online.
